With music, a conductor must hear the notes, understand the mechanics of the instruments, but also be connected to the psyches and emotions of each musician, because that is how you tap into the soul of the music. 

Performance is very emotional, in this way.

To do this, a leader must also be a black belt in emotional self-management. To be able to come to the table level-headed in all instances and despite emotional setbacks from you or those you lead.

Leaders who are more concerned with being likable tend to cause more chaos.

Effectiveness is not a function of likability, but of emotional management.

It's an interesting balance.
